Details

We developed this product in collaboration with MatMill.

We saw the MatMill Läuterhexe and really liked the product, except for the standard tee-fitting that was used. On all of our kettle inlets and outlets, we had those nice face sealing fittings with integrated O-ring. The mash tun should be no exception! So we decided to design a custom tee for the Läuterhexe to screw into: a shiny and easy to clean fitting, with our trusted face sealing O-ring groove. We now buy the Läuterhexe from Matmill and combine it with our own tee.

MattMill LäuterHexe

The LäuterHexe is a German invention, and it is a brilliant new way to filter wort. Filtering is achieved by the slits in the spiral: when the spiral is bent, small slits are created between the wires. The degree of filtering depends on the the bending radius: a larger radius fill results in finer filtering.

The Läuterhexe is very easy to use: you can dump your grains right onto the spiral. When mashing is done, you just unscrew the spiral from the tee and rinse it off. You can even put it in the dishwasher. Clean up has never been so easy.

Sizing recommendations

For your mash tun, it is recommended to have an extra loop in the center of the kettle. For a 45 cm kettle, the 175 cm filter works well (shown in the photos). For a 35 cm kettle, 120 cm is recommended.

We also use a Lauter Helix in our boil kettle as a hop filter. Because we want finer filtering here, we omit the center loop and lay the spiral in a circle. We had good results with 120 cm for a 45cm kettle (see photo) and 90 cm for a 35 cm kettle. We do not have 90 cm as a standard size, but can cut it to size for you on request.

To calculate the size for your boil kettle, use the formula: pi*(diameter - 6) - 2. The Lauterhexe will be about 2cm from the kettle wall.

Thread

This Lauterhexe has 1/2" NPT thread, if you are not the USA, you probably want one with BSP thread, see related prodcuts.
